Imphal, August 05 2016 :
Governor V Shanmuganathan today inaugurated Manipur Technical University (MTU) at the State Academy of Training, Takyelpat.
Notably, Manipur is the only State after Assam in the entire North East region to have a technical university.
With due approval of the Governor, the Manipur Technical University Ordinance was enforced in the State from April 23 this year.
MTU offers BTech courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering and Computer Science Engineering.
There would be 150 seats in total, 30 seats for each course.
Professional colleges which offer different courses in Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture and Business Administration would be affiliated to MTU.
MTU would start its session this academic year inside the State Academy of Training campus, Takyelpat temporarily.
Speaking at the inaugural function this afternoon, Governor V Shanmuganathan stated that engineers have immense roles in developing countries like India.
Science and technology are the crucial tools needed for modernisation of a society.
Poverty, unemployment, inadequacy of health care facilities and lack of higher education are some of the major issues plaguing the country.
The Government needs to pay extra attention towards construction of houses for homeless people, construction of school buildings, health centres, roads and transport infrastructure, food security etc.
Given this situation, the engineering institution can turn out to be a huge asset to the State.
Many students of the State have been pursuing engineering courses outside the State which entail huge expenditures.
The opening of MTU can save these expenditures and it can definitely contribute towards making Manipur an advanced State in the field of engineering science, the Governor asserted.
Being in the very nascent stage, the university is lacking faculty members as well as physical infrastructure.
Yet, the Government alone cannot make the university a reputed one.
It demands active cooperation of the people, he added.
Chief Minister O Ibobi who presided the function stated that more courses would be opened at MTU in addition to the five courses already offered.
He assured that necessary infrastructure and equipment as required under AICTE would be provided to the university.
It is the younger generations who are the most valuable resources of the State and they should work towards making a Manipur a hub of quality education, Ibobi asserted.
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam remarked that Manipur was in dire need of such a technical university in view of the growing number of students who are interested in technical courses.
Education Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, Works Minister Ksh Biren, Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai, Agriculture Minister Abdul Nasir, Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam and MLA O Landhoni were also present at the inaugural function.
