CSOs call for sanity, peaceful solution

Imphal, May 02 2015 : Different civil society organisations of the State have urged all con-cerned to resolve the tense situation prevailing at Gwaltabi area, which broke out follow-ing a misunderstanding between two sections of people on April 30 .

However, even as the two groups of feuding people held a meeting with Chief Minister O Ibobi today, they could not come to an agreement.

Nonetheless, another reconciliatory meeting would be held tomorrow, informed a source.

It is reported that tension still runs high at Gwaltabi and surrounding areas.

In a press conference jointly hosted by All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, Committee on Human Rights (COHR), AMESCO, MPWAK and All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMOVA) at AMUCO office today, AMUCO president Y Mani Khuman said that a group of people vandalized around 20 houses and other household items like TV sets as a fallout of an misunderstanding regarding the imposition of All Tribal Chiefs' Forum sponsored bandh at Gwaltabi on April 30 .

He said that the incident was quite violent and the matter could have been worse if the owners were in their houses when the incident happened.

Urging all sections of the people not to give communal tinge to the incident, Mani Khuman appealed to all concerned not to repeat such unwanted attacks in future.

Saying that the incident could have been prevented if Lamlai police reached the area on time, he said that the local MLA must take proactive role in restoring normalcy at the area.

"We need to develop a positive vision for our future and welfare of the State by opposing the communal provocations", he said.

He said that AMUCO along with other CSOs would try its level best to bring an amicable solution to the current tension through talks.

Mani Khuman also blamed the State Government for the unwanted incident happened at Gwaltabi stating that ATCF was compelled to clamp the bandh as the Government failed to pay attention to their grievances.

Taking part at the press conference, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur president condemned the violent incident occurred at Gwaltabi on April 30 .

She also urged the Government to take up immediate measures to restore normalcy at the area.

Speaking at the press conference, COHR chairman Phulindro Konsam also strongly condemned the incident.

Saying that vandalising others houses is tantamount to violation of human rights, Phulindro said that it is unfortunate that many people have to take shelter in a relief camp due to an 'internal displacement' .

He also urged all concerned to carry out their agitation democratically.

Urging the Government to provide compensation to those whose houses were damaged, Phulindro also demanded that a thorough investigation be conducted to book the culprits.

AMESCO president M Suren appealed to all sections of people not to give a communal tinge to the incident and bring a solution at the earliest.
