Imphal, August 30 2016:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) is all set to ban usage of conventional plastic bags in the State considering its hazardous impact on environment.
Addressing mediapersons today at its head office located at Keishampat, DESAM secretary of health and environment Sh Devdutta Sharma highlighted the various hazardous impacts caused by conventional plastic bags which are used in our day to day activities.
Extensive use of plastic bags in our daily activities has polluted our environment causing serious environmental degradation, polluting land, water and air.
He said people are less aware of the hazardous impacts of plastic bags.
DESAM will launch a mass awareness campaign in various areas of the State including hill and valley districts.
As an alternative means, use of bio-degradable plastic bags is encouraged, Devdutta added.
He urged businessmen and others engaged in importing large quantities of conventional plastic bags from neighbouring countries and States to introduce bio-degradable plastic bags to the people of Manipur.
He said that three months will be given to utilise the already purchased plastic bags afterwhich it will be banned in any form.
"The campaign for a cleaner and healthier environment is for the welfare of the entire people of Manipur.
We urge the people to extend their support to DESAM's campaign," he added.
He also applauded the efforts of certain NGOs and organizations that are working for a cleaner environment.
