Imphal, January 05 2015:
The Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM) and the All Zeliangrong Students Union (AZSU) have alleged that qualitative aspect is being neglected in the ongoing construction work of Tupul-Jiribam railway line.
Speaking to media persons at the Deulalane office of ZSUM, AZSU president Pamei Tingenlung said that a joint team of ZSUM and AZSU conducted a field assessment of the railway construction work from December 26 to 30 .
The team found that the railway line is being constructed without giving any thought to the qualitative aspect.
Bridge-164 which is being constructed by Simplex company at Khongsang would be the highest railway bridge in India.
But sand being used in the construction work is supplied from a nearby river.
As such, the bridge may pose serious risks at one point of time, Pamei Tingenlung said.
Likewise there was no sign of maintaining quality in the construction works of tunnel no 21 at Rengkung and tunnel no 27 at Marangjing.
These works are being executed by Onicon company.
Tupul-Jiribam railway project is being executed using sand which is more suitable for cultivation of potato.
Sushee Infra Private Limited has been constructing tunnel no 19 at Awangkhul but there too, there was no sign of maintaining quality.
Almost all the companies engaged in execution of the railway project's different components have been using sand quarried from nearby rivers.
This is a matter of serious concern to the ZSUM and AZSU.
The matter would be apprised to the relevant Ministries in black and white, said Pamei Tingenlung.
He went on to question how the North East Frontier Railway has been monitoring the railway line construction work.
