International Literacy Day which was observed on September 8 worldwide was held yesterday at Bethany English High School, Senapati with Asst Commissioner Sumant Singh as the chief guest and ZEO, Senapati N Jacob as the president.
The function started with the lighting of the literacy lamp by the chief guest and president followed by speeches from different persons on literacy.
AC, Sumant Singh (IAS) stressed on the need to give more importance to education and asked Senapati district denizens to endeavor more for prosperity of the district so all the people could enjoy the fruits of development.
Senapati district ranks lowest among the districts of the state in terms of rate of literacy despite its advantages of occupying a key geographical position, he observed.
Other speakers on the occasion also emphasized on the need to step up total literacy campaign in the district.
In the essay competition for school students, Chaire Gangmei of Bethany English High School bagged the first prize followed by LD Learou of Lao Radiant School with Vakho and Ramesh Poonai of Mt Everest School sharing the third place.
The fourth place went to Th Pouziivei of Bethany English High School, fifth to KS Pakuo of Lao Radiant School, sixth to Kariaba Jonas of TM School, seventh to N Shekho of Mt Everest School and eight to Jose K of TM School.
Altogether, four schools from the district headquarters participated in the essay competition.
