The problem of HIV/AIDS in Manipur is becoming grimmer with the rate of infection among the common people having reached 1 out of every 100 persons, according to a statement released by the Project Director of Manipur AIDS Control Society.
Considering the monthly epidemiological report on HIV/AIDS infection and death cases in Manipur, the situation is very alarming, the statement said, adding that Manipur has become the first among the six Indian States which has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS cases with one percent out of every 100 persons being infected by the virus.
According to the report, a total of 1,09,713 blood samples related to HIV/AIDS cases were screened during the month of June last.
Out of these, 17,616, including 3066 female are confirmed of HIV positive and another 3,102 blood samples are confirming of having AIDS.
The umber of people who died of the disease during the month are 433, the report said.
As per the Sentinel Surveillance Report, 2003, 30.7 percent of HIV/AIDS in Manipur are spread from Intravenous Drug Users, 12.4 percent from commercial sex workers, 29.2 percent from homosexuals, 1.34 percent from HIV/AIDS infected mothers to their children and 13 percent from STDs.
