Govt inks MoU with CSOs, pacifies enraged people

Acting swiftly to pacify agitators over the death of a young girl and a man whose bodies were found at Moltinchan and Khumjang villages under Sugnu police station in Chandel district yesterday, the State Government led by IFCD and YAS Minister Letpao Haokip struck an agreement with the the JAC formed against the double killings today at Khopijang village, Chandel district.
Accordingly, the civil society organizations have decided to call off their agitation after the Government and the CSOs including representatives of the JAC, KSO Gunpi block, KWHR and Ereima Nupi Lup, Sugnu, agreed that investigation regarding the twin killings of Nengneikim and K Tuboi would be taken up with utmost importance.
The two sides also agreed that exemplary punishment would be given to the culprits.
The CSOs also agreed to lend support to the investigating agencies and district administration.

The Minister also assured to provide the necessary ex-gratia to the victims' families .
Besides Letpao Haokip, other Government officials appending signatures in the MoU included DC Chandel, Krishna Kumar, Kakching SP, S Goutam, SDO, Chakpikarong R David and SDPO, Sugnu, A Romendro Singh.
Letpao Haokip assured that the Government would take up appropriate measures to ensure that no anti-social elements disturb the peace and tranquility of the area in future.
Asserting that the Government would not tolerate such heinous crimes, the Minister also assured that fitting punishment would be given to the perpetrators of the crimes.
Speaking to the people, Sugnu SDPO A Romendro said that none of the people living in the vicitnity of the locations where the two bodies were found, gave any conclusive statement when the police enquired about sounds or noises they might have heard when the culprits came to dump the bodies.
He pointed out that the only important clue the police have is the mobile phone of the deceased girl and appealed to the people to cooperate and support the police in the investigation.
It may be mentioned that the various CSOs and womenfolk blocked the road at Serou Lamkhai and staged a sit in protest demanding arrest of the culprits within 24 hours, removal of VDF personnel from the checkposts at Serou Lamkhai, Rs 10 lakh ex gratia each for the families of the two deceased individuals, Government jobs for the next of kins and steps from the State Government side to ensure peace and harmony in the area.
