Binalakshmi Nepram selected by Colombia University

Noted humanitarian, author,
civil & gender rights activist
from Manipur, Binalakshmi
Nepram has been selected by
Columbia University, for their
programme on Rights of
Indigenous People which will
start from May 22, 2017,
conveyed a press release
issued by the Coordinator of
Manipur Women Gun
Survivors Network/ Control
Arms Foundation of India.
The programme is aimed
at creating awareness about
the 2007 UN Declaration on
the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
including Indigenous
Women's Movements.
The programme also include
visit to UN
Headquarters, meetings with
Victoria Tauli Corpus, UN
Special Rapporteur on the
Rights of Indigenous Peoples,
Dr Chandra Roy
Henriksen, Chief of the Secretariat
of the UN Permanent
Forum on Indigenous Issues
also with UNICEF and UN
WOMEN.
It stated that Binalakshmi
would also be meeting
Chakma Chief & Barrister,
Raja Devasish Roy from
Chittagong Hill Tracts and
leaders of Native American
Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe in
Akwesasne, USA aside from
addressing Columbia University
on issues of indigenous
people's history, cultures,
struggles, rights and lands
pertaining to Manipur and
North East India.
Binalakshmi Nepram,
founder of Manipur Women
Gun Survivors Network and
the first Manipuri woman to
address the United Nations
Headquarters in New York,
is the author of several books
and is associated with women
survivors of violence for their
empowerment for over a decade.
Binalakshmi will leave for
New York on May 18, it
added.
