TSE probes the possible reasons

Imphal, May 30:
It is a fantastic co-incidence ! .
Even as speculations are doing the round that the Government may hike the price of petroleum products, following the global rise in prices of crude oil, most of the petrol pumps in Imphal have remained closed or are opened for only a few hours a day for the last couple of days.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, a source from the IOC said that following the global rise in the price of crude oil, it has been losing several crores of rupees and facing a huge deficit.
To offset the deficit, the IOC has been petitioning the Union Government to either raise the price of petroleum products or to offer them subsidies, said the source.

However the Centre has not agreed to the proposal of the IOC to either hike the price of fuel or offer subsidy, said the source and added that since the deficit is going up with each passing day, speculation is doing the round that the Centre may ultimately capitulate and raise the price of petroleum products.
Even speculations are doing the round that the price of petroleum products may be hiked anytime, almost all the petrol pumps in Imphal downed shop today while some were opened for a few hours.
At some pumps the diesel outlet was opened.
Adding a twist to the story is the confirmation by officials of the Assam Oil Depot who maintained that a total of 64 kilolitres of petrol were released for nine pumps in Imphal today.
According to the AOD, the petrol released to the pumps included four KL, to Jas Gas, 12 KLs to PCTC, four KLs to Imphal Oil Agency, eight KLs to Nillo Patsoi, four KLs to Ibochou oil pump, Kakwa, eight KLs to Kusum oil pump, eight KLs to Porompat oil pump and another 12 KLs to Churachandpur oil pump.
Sources said that the fuel shortage follows the now suspended economic blockade on the National Highways as well as the panic buying by some elements in barrels against the background of the speculations of hike in prices of petroleum products.
Despite the suspension of the economic blockade, officials from the AOD said that the transportation of fuel to Manipur has been hit due to lack of security escort.
However on the other hand, petrol pump owners said that the fuel stock is running low at the depot following the economic blockade since all the stocks were used up during that period.
After the blockade was lifted, only thirty tankers had deposited fuel at the depot, said the officials.
