Mosquito nets treated with anti-malaria insecticide were distributed to a number of below poverty line families in Thanga Chinglak and Moirang Khunou villages under Thanga Assembly Constituency today.
The mosquito net distribution programme was hosted by Rural Economic Development and Environment Organisation, Thanga under the aegis of State malaria Society with Thanga MLA T Mangibabu formally handing them over to more than 1000 families.
In his brief speech, the legislator reminded that Thanga being one of the islets of the Loktak Lake and breeding ground for mosquitos every individual family needs to take precautionary measures from malarial infection.
Conveying to the people that today's programme is a part of the State Government's initiative to check outbreak of malaria, he also assured that those families not covered today would be benefited in the second phase at the earliest.
The MLA further advised those families who wish to soak their mosquito nets with the anti-malaria insecticide that necessary arrangement would be made for the purpose.
speaking on the occasion, State malaria Officer Dr H Nimaichand informed that out of 1.15 mosquito nets provided to Manipur by the Government of India for treatment with the anti-malaria insecticide 10,000 has been earmarked for Bishnupur district alone.
He also cautioned against washing the treated mosquito nets for atleast six months besides informing that the insecticide used in it will also serve as repellent against spiders and cockroaches.
The officer reiterated to the people to take all possible precautionary measures from mosquito bites as not only is malaria spread by the blood sucking insect but infects human with the dangerous japanese encephalitis.
