68th National School Games begins, TN win first gold

Imphal, April 07 2025: The 68th National School Games for Thang-Ta, Weightlifting, Football and Sepak Takraw hosted by Manipur commenced from Monday at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, here.

Participants of different age groups will compete in the four disciplines of the Games till April 21 .

The opening ceremony of the Games held at the Main Stadium was attended by Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS) secretary Naorem Pr-abin as chief guest, director Dr Mayengbam Veto Singh as president and 68th National School Games observer Kamalendu Shil and Dronacharya awardee Leishangthem Ibomcha as guests of honour.

March past by contingents from different states, un furling of flag, oath taking and declaration of the Games open by chief guest marked the opening ceremony.

A total of 205 lifters from 27 states including from host Manipur will compete in U-17 boys weightlifting while 206 girls from 28 states will compete in the same age group.

On the first day, Tamil Nadu's K Ishwariya clinched gold in 40kg girls category with lifts of 53kg in snatch and 64kg in clean and jerk.

Assam's Niharika Saikia and Dharsinipriya of Puducherry bagged silver and bronze medals respectively.

In Thang-Ta, a total of 55 boys from different states will compete in U-14 and 58 girls in the same age group.

A total of 65 boys and 63 girls from different states will compete in U-19 Thang-Ta event.

The Games will have Sepak Takraw events for U-14 and U-19 for both boys and girls as also U-19 football for both boys and girls.
