AR to organise Major Bob Khathing sports meet at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, January 21 2024:
Assam Rifles Somsai Battalion, Ukhrul under the aegis of 10 Sector Assam Rifles is all set to organise Major Bob Khathing sports tournaments at Ukhrul district headquarters to honour and commemorate the 112th birth anniversary of the legend late Major Bob Khathing Ralengnao.
The event is going to be organised in coordination with Ukhrul District Sports Association (UDSA) from February 15 and will culminate with the wreath-laying ceremony at late Major Bob Khathing statue on February 26 in the town.
The grand opening ceremony will witness a football match.
It will also mark the beginning of the 4th edition of Baby League football tournament (under 12), the 9th edition of Women's volleyball tournament and the 10th edition of Men's football tournament.
Baby league football and women's volleyball tournaments will be organised at Thahao, Wino Bazaar and men's football tournament will be organised at the district ground.
It might be mentioned, Major Bob Khathing is the icon who brought Tawang under the Indian Administration without shedding a drop of blood.
He started his career by joining the British Army and participated in World War II, first as the Commissioner of the 19th Hyderabad Regiment (later days, 7 KUMAON Regiment) and then as the local Captain of the V Force operations in Manipur.
He was elected as a Member to Manipur Assembly in 1948 representing the Sadar Constituency and served as the Minister for Hills Administration and Manipur Rifles till the Assembly was dissolved in 1949, upon assimilation into the Indian Union.
He was a recipient of Padma Shri, a member of the Order of the British Empire Military Cross and C-in-C Gallantry Certificate.
The Assam Rifles in honour of his marvellous services to the Nation is all set for commemoration of his birth anniversary by organising the sporting events for the youths of Ukhrul district.
The winning teams will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000; Rs 50,000 and Rs 15,000 for Men's football, Women's Volleyball and Baby league respectively.
Men's football tournament will feature 16 teams while the women's volleyball and baby football league will feature 8 teams each.
The registration of teams will be based on first cum first serve basis.
Teams may collect the registration forms from 35 Assam Rifles Post at Thahao, Wino Bazaar, Ukhrul.
The registration fee is Rs 5000 and Rs 3000 for the men's football & women's volleyball respectively while registration fee will be free for baby league.
The last date of registration is February 7 .
