Farm worker shot dead, JAC formed

Thoubal, May 19 2025: An employee of a farm in Heirok Khangarok under Heirok police station in Thoubal district was allegedly shot dead by his employer following a dispute during a feast on Sunday night.

A Joint Action Committee (JAC) has been formed in connection with the incident, threatening not to claim the body until its demands are met.

According to police report, accused farm owner named Ningthoujam Rajnikanta (44), s/o late Ningthoujam Menjor of Heirok Part II Mayai Leikai, used his licensed gun to shoot his employee identified as Laishram Tombi (45), s/o late Laishram Khomei of Heirok Part II Mandop Leikai, on the head.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 pm at Heirok Khangabok during a feast to celebrate the inauguration of the newly established farm.

The crime scene is about 4 km away from their residence.

The police stated that upon arrest, the accused admitted to shooting the victim with his gun.

The report further informed that on Sunday, Rajnikanta celebrated the inauguration of his new farm by hosting dinner for some select persons.

After a heated argument while having their meal, Rajnikanta opened fire at Tombi, who was rushed to Thoubal District Hospital but declared brought dead.

His body was later transferred to JNIMS for post-mortem examination.

Later around 11:30 pm, enraged locals stormed and destroyed Rajnikanta's house.

Aftermath of the killing, a public meeting was held at the Divine Nongpok Ningthou Youths Club in Heirok Part II Devi Mandop Leikai on Monday.

During the meeting, the "JAC against the Cold-Blooded Murder of Laishram Tombi" was formed and adopted several resolutions.

The JAC condemned the incident as a premeditated act and demanded stringent action against Rajnikanta and any accomplices.

It also demanded a sum of Rs 50 lakh ex-gratia by the accused's family, while also demanding that Tombi's last rites be performed at the farm where the incident occurred.

The JAC submitted its charter of demands to the DC and SP of Thoubal district around 3:30 pm on Monday.

A sit-in protest was also organised at Devi Mandop, where demonstrators displayed placards condemning the killing and calling for justice and legal action against all those involved.
