Under the macro management scheme, AO (Chemistry) of the Department of Agriculture has taken up preparation of bio-composting pits in order to produce compost for use in agriculture in the State.
The scheme was launched by the Department of Agriculture under central sponsorship with the objective to promote organic farming.
As a part of the initiative, preparation of 28 bio-com-posting pits have been taken up today in an agricultural field of Takhel in Imphal East district under the direct supervision of AO (Chemistry) Ph Rajendro and Dr A Herojit of the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, CAU A pit of 25 feet in length, 3 feet in breadth and 3 feet in depth can produce 2000 to 2500 kgs of compost after three months.
The compost pit is made by burying paddy husk, straw and cow dung layer after layer.
Even though such types of compost were prepared in Manipur in the past, the new initiative is based on scientific methods.
Dr A Herojit said that the compost being prepared is for use in infertile agricultural fields.
He further informed that this compost contains 1.22 percent nitrogen, 1.45 percent potash and 1.05 percent phosphorus.
Ph Rajendra remarked that preparation of bio-composting pits is major step towards adoption of organic farming methods in the State.
He further informed similar steps to prepare bio composting pits will be taken up in different other parts of the State.
