A meeting of faculty members, officers and non-teaching staff of Manipur University held today chaired by Vice Chancellor N Bijoy Singh strongly condemned the 'unwarranted assault' on the students of the University by police personnel on July 26.Decrying the abuse of human rights in the State, the University community also resolved to appeal to the State Government and authorities concerned to take up necessary steps to restore peace and normalcy taking into account the sentiments of the people in general and in the interests of the student community in particular.
It also stressed on the need for the State Government to create a conducive atmosphere to ensure unhampered academic activities while calling upon the law enforcing agencies to exercise utmost restraint in dealing with the public who are expressing their grievances and protests in a peaceful and democratic way.
Meanwhile, the University will also organize an open debate on the topic 'Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 and its Impact on the People of North East India with Reference to Manipur' on July 31 at its Centenary Hall at 10 am.
Many eminent citizens, distinguished personalities and intellectuals, lawyers, educationists and representatives of various voluntary organizations of Manipur would participate in the debate, added a press release.
