Students, others condemn bomb blast

Imphal, February 24 2024: Dhana-manjuri University students staged a sit-in protest and took out a rally today condemning the bomb blast inside the university campus that killed one student and injured another yesterday night.

The students marched towards the CM Bungalow and met with the Chief Minister.

The IED explosion yesterday night killed Oinam Kenegy (24), a 5th semester student of DMU Science.

Oinam Kenegy was son of Oinam Ingocha and Oinam (ongbi) Ibemcha Devi of Upokpi, Bishnupur district.

Today, fellow students of the university condemned the killing and appealed to the Government to arrest and punish the culprits involved in the incident.

After a brief sit-in, organised inside the campus, the students marched towards the Chief Minister's Bungalow through Khwairamband Ima Keithel, where womenfolk joined them in the rally.

The students and the womenfolk were stopped at Kanglapat by the police, and later some students were allowed to meet the Chief Minister at his bungalow.

Separately, locals of Upopi organised a public meeting in connection with the incident and formed a Joint Action Committee before adopting several resolu- tions.

The JAC's convenor, Khwairakpam Irabot condemned the incident and said it was a dastardly act which killed an innocent student.

He said all persons involved in the killing of the student must be arrested within 48 hours [from time of the incident] and the Government must give ex-gratia to the bereaved family before his last rites.

Stringent agitation will be launched if the demands are not met, he added.

A sit-in demonstration was organised at Upokpi.

Meanwhile, several organisations including the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) Manipur, Manipur Youth and Students' Union, Thoubal Amasung Kakching District Apunba Lup (TAKDAL) and others have condemned the incident and urged the Government to arrest and punish the culprits.

Manipur Women's federation (MWF) and Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup (MKNM), in a joint statement, have also vehemently condemned the bomb blast which killed Oinam Kenegy.

The women organisations warned individuals and groups concerned of collective action against them by the people.
