Imphal, April 07 2025:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, recently passed by Parliament and assented to by President Draupadi Murmu.
In a post on X, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that the legislation is unconstitutional and undermines Article 25, the Right to Freedom of Religion, a fundamental right in the Constitution.
Meghachandra also accused the Government of attempting to bring personal laws under State control.
He stated that he stands with the minority community members in opposing the unconstitutional legislation, which would take away their properties.
The MPCC president tagged Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Congress leaders in the post.
The post read, "I, on behalf of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, strongly object to the @narendramodi Government's Waqf (Amendment) Act which was recently passed in the Parliament and was given assent by the President of India.
"I believe that the Modi Government's Waqf (Amendment) Act is unconstitutional, and it also undermines Article 25 of the Constitution - the Right to Freedom of Religion - which is enshrined as a fundamental right in the Constitution.
"It is nothing but an attempt through unconstitutional legislation to bring personal laws under State control.
"I stand with our brothers and sisters of the minorities of the country in opposing the unconstitutional legislation which will snatch away the properties of our brothers and sisters of the minority community.
"I and our Congress party will oppose this divisive RSS/BJP agenda which is against the law of the land.
@kharge , @RahulGandhi, @priyankagandhi, @kcvenugopalmp , @saptagiriulaka" .
