Imphal, March 31 2010:
Family of a 23 year-old girl, who committed suicide today, charged a Sub-Inspector of police commando with being behind the drastic action the girl took.
Khumukcham Shyamasakhi, daughter of Udoi of Kakching Khunou Ngai-khong Leikai, committed suicide by consuming sulfuric acid.
The girl who worked as a receptionist cum pharmacist at New Life Clinic, Mayang Imphal consumed the poison last night at the house of her uncle, and died this morning, at about 6.30 am at Shija Hospitals where she was admitted for treatment.
While talking to reporters at the Manipur Press Club, the family strongly charged that a Sub-Inspector of Manipur police commandos was behind the girl's decision to commit suicide.
The mother of the victim, Manimacha said, her daughter was compelled to take the drastic decision to commit suicide by endlessly indecent acts of a police Sub-Inspector named Anand who indulged in spreading canards which hurt the prestige of her daughter.
She said that the SI spread false information that Shayamasakhi was having love affairs with him for a long time.
Their relationship was so intimate that she had an abortion.
Not only this, on March 28 last, her daughter, Late Shyamasakhi phoned her to come and take her from the clinic at Mayang Imphal where she was working.
On receiving the phone call, her brother went to escort her back home.
But she returned home the next morning by herself.
After she related all the harrassments meted out to her by the SI, she said she did not want to live any longer, Manimacha said.
One of the local friends of Shayamasakhi, who was also present at the press meet, said that on the afternoon of March 28, SI Anand assaulted Shyamasakhi in her presence, and she saw blood spilling from her mouth.
In the backdrop of all these happenings, the family strongly charged that the suicide of their daughter was closely related with the police officer's behaviours.
The lifeless body of Shyamasakhi has been transferred to RIMS morgue.
