Nursing student found dead

Imphal, May 14 2025: A BSc nursing student from Meghalaya was found dead, hanging in an abandoned hostel at RIMS under Lamphel police station, early this morning.

The deceased has been identified as Abiel Sachiana Ch Marak (21), d/o Dicky Nangbok Sangma of Rongram, Asanaggre West Garo Hills Meghalaya.

She was a fourth-semester BSc Nursing student at RIMS, residing at the Leibaklei House Nursing Hostel.

Reportedly, the nursing students of RIMS had a meeting with the institution's Director yesterday that went late into the night, and as a result, today was declared a half-holiday.

According to reports culled from the spot, PG students staying on the western side of the nursing complex alerted the other students this morning about a body hanging in the abandoned old nursing hostel, which had been gutted in a fire in April 2019 .

Upon receiving the information, students rushed to the spot and found the deceased hanging in the abandoned hostel.

They then informed the hospital authorities and the police station concerned.

The area was cordoned off for an inquest after a team of Imphal West police led by Additional SP (Law and Order) Irom Rojit arrived at the scene.

The RIMS Director was also present at the scene during the inquest.

After the inquest, a forensic expert team examined the spot, and the corpse was taken away.

The body was then deposited at JNIMS mortuary for postmortem.

Lamphel Police have registered an unnatural death case in connection with the incident.

The post-mortem is expected to be conducted after the arrival of the deceased student's family members.

Meanwhile, RIMS has condoled the tragic death of the nursing student.

In a message issued by its media cell, RIMS said that Abiel Sachiana was found hanging at around 8.30 am.

Police are investigating the case.
