Imphal, September 06 2023:
Locals of Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi have came out strongly against frequent disturbances meted out to them in the name of investigation by a team of Central Bureau of Investi-gation (CBI) and Central forces in connection with a July 6 incident.
It may be recalled that a lifeless body of an unknown lady was found dumped at Mayai Koibi on July 6 and the probe into the incident has been handed over to CBI.
The locals of Mayaikoibi Mamang Leikai, Mayaikoibi Ningthoujam Leikai, Mayai-koibi Chabungbam Leikai and Mayaikoibi Awang Leikai today gathered and staged a sit-in at Mayaikoibi Mamang Leikai community hall to denounce the repeated disturbances they faced in the name of investigation.
Representatives of Kwa-keithel Thounaojam Leikai also attended the sit-in protest during which placards inscribed with "No more disturbance to the localities by CBI/Central forces'', "Remove Assam Rifles'', "No Separate Administration", "Update NRC" etc were displayed.
Speaking on the sidelines of the sit-in, secretary of Mayaikoibi Mamang Leikai Development Association Th Subhash said that Meira Paibis and club functionaries of the localities have been co-operating with the agency and had submitted statements earlier after being summoned by Lamphel PS OC regarding the incident.
After the case was handed over to the CBI, agents of the Central investigating agency had visited the neighbourhood from where the body was recovered on multiple occasions, he said.
Unlike earlier visits, CBI sleauths along with scores of Central forces conducted a house to house visit yesterday and conducted inquiry thereby causing many inconveniences and creating an impression of intimidation to the residents of the locality, he said.
There is also a school nearby and the presence of many troops has created a disturbing atmosphere for the students and the guardians visiting the school to receive their kids, he said while questioning what prompted such heavy security arrangements in the highly peaceful and cooperative locality.
Urging the CBI to not cause any further disturbances, Subhash went on to say that the locals have unanimously decided to bar any similar visit of the investigating agency in the future.
He also called upon the investigating agency to give due emphasis to other cases of atrocities meted out to Meiteis in the peripheral areas of the Imphal valley instead of frequenting and disturbing peace in Mayaikoibi.
