Imphal, April 07 2025:
The Joint Committee Opposing Delimitation Exercise in Manipur, Kangleipak 2020, has raised strong objection to conduct of delimitation in the state based on the data of 2001 census.
Demanding the government to defer the exercise, the committee, formed by IPSA, KSA, PANDM, ACOAM Lup, and IPAK, said that they will take the matter to the Supreme Court if required.
Addressing a press meet at IPSA's Keishampat office on Monday, chairman Yumnamcha Dilipkumar recounted that the Committee had filed PIL at the High Court of Manipur in 2022 to halt any delimitation exercise in the state till 2026, to which the High Court made a judgment in favour of the PIL .
The committee disagrees with the Supreme Court order to complete delimitation by July 25, he said and added that delimitation in the state should not be based on the erroneous census data of 2001 and 2011 .
Both census data reported unnatural population growth rate in nine sub-divisions in three hill districts.
Even if the government has to conduct the delimitation, it should first make necessary rectification in the census data, link the citizens with Aadhaar card, he said, reiterating that, if required, the committee will file a petition to the Supreme Court.
