Pangolin Cup 2025 begins in Senapati

Imphal, March 19 2025: With the goal of shielding pangolins from poachers and addressing illegal wildlifetrade (IWT), the first-ever football tournament, "Pangolin Cup 2025", kicked off on March 17 at the Senapati Astro Turf.

The tournament will run until March 22.A total of 16 teams from various parts of Senapati are participating in the tournament, organised by The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in collaboration with the Senapati District Olympic Association of Manipur (SDOAM) and the Manipur Forest Department, with support from the Pangolin Crisis Fund (PCF) under the Wildlife Conservation Network.

The Pangolin Cup is part of WTI's 'Countering Pangolin Trafficking' project, which addresses the illegal trade of pangolins in Manipur and Nagaland.

By harnessing the universal appeal of football, WTI aims to engage local youth, leaders, and community members in Senapati district, encouraging them to become active stakeholders in wildlife protection and to strengthen their connection with nature.

The tournament is a creative approach to sensitising the public about the urgent need to protect pangolins, whose scales and meat are highly sought after, making them the most trafficked mammals in the world.

Senapati DC Mamoni Do-ley, who was present on the occasion, called upon CSOs to discourage the younger generations from treating hunting as a sport.

Senapati DFO Shanngam S also highlighted the platform's role in raising awareness on the urgency and importance of wildlife, biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, while urging communities to support the initiative for protection of the critically endangered Chinese pangolin.

The function was also attended by United Naga Council president Ng Lohro and Arunachal Pradesh WTI CBRC manager Panjit Basumatari among others.
