National awardee Romi Meitei felicitated

A felicitation function in honour of Romi Meitei, who recently received an award at the 69th National Film Festival, was organised by the Directorate of Regional Indian Languages and Research (DRILR), Manipur International University (MIU), Monday.
Romi also inaugurated the Audio-Visual Research Centre of the university at Ghari as a part of the programme attended by MIU Registrar Professor T Brajeshori and Central Institute of Hindi, Agra (Mysore Centre) regional director Dr Parman Singh aS presidium members.
Delivering the key note address, Dean of Directorate of Regional Indian Languages and Research Prof Th Chandramani said that the Audio Visual Research Centre has been opened with the primary objective of promoting Manipuri language.
With the number of people speaking Manipuri language declining, the language has become endangered now.
There is the need for documentation of Manipuri language which has a history of more 200 years.
It is with the aim of maintaining written and audio visual records of the languages, traditional lifestyle and culture of various communities settling in Manipur, that the audio visual research centre of the university has been established, Chandramani elaborated.
He also stated that the centre would take up research works on the school of thoughts of Romi Meitei.
An interaction programme with the national awardee was also facilitated during the function.
