Imphal, July 29 2012:
Even as the street lamps put up over the Bir Tikendrajit Flyover Bridge have been remaining defunct for the last five months, almost all the street lamps in various part of Imphal ceased to function lately giving an eerie experience of complete black out during the night.
Although the state government is supposedly trying all it could to develop the capital city on par with other major cities of the country, bumpy roads and dark streets are all that people have known for quite long.
When Hueiyen Lanpao conducted an on spot inspection of the conditions of the street lamps in Imphal city, it was found that all the street lamps over the Bir Tikendrajit Flyover Bridge were out of order.
Apart from this, almost all the street lamps along Imphal-Mayai Lambi, Imphal-Churachandpur road, Singjamei to Canchipur along Imphal-Moreh road are in inoperative condition.

Only a few street lamps in Babupara, Palace Compound and the Raj Bhawan area were found lit up, perhaps out of security reasons.
Sources revealed that with the blackout in the heart of Imphal after nightfall every day, it has become a problem even for security personnel in maintaining law and order.
Moreover, the CCTV cameras installed in different parts of Imphal city to monitor unwanted incidents have remained useless in the absence of electricity.
Under such conditions, there are apprehensions that more crimes would erupt in the city and security personnel would not be able to perform their duties effectively.
Meanwhile, the lighting system in JNIMS has reportedly failed short of satisfying the expectation of the patients.
At present, the electric bulbs put up all along the verandah of the casualty ward have not been functioning giving lot of inconveniences to the patient parties at night when they need to call the doctors and the nurses on duty.
Poor lighting system in the premier state medical institute is the complaint not only of the patient parties but also of the nurses on duty.
A nurse on duty in JNIMS told Hueiyen Lanpao that they find it really hard to pass through the long corridor of the casualty on the first floor at night as anything could happen in the dark.
Apart from electricity problems, there is also acute shortage of water in the hospital.
Absence of proper dustbins has also made the hospital more dirty.
