Imphal, November 14 2016:
In the backdrop of the protracted economic blockade being imposed by UNC on Imphal-Dimapur highway and Imphal-Jiribam highway, many people have suggested that NH-102(B) (earlier known as Guite Road) be developed as an alternative highway.
Construction of the highway started in August this year by Guwahati based Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd under National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Engineers of an Imphal-based partner firm of Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd told a team of media persons today that they have been striving to complete the highway construction ahead of the completion target which is July 2019 .
The road connecting Churachandpur to Molnom via Singhat constitutes NH-120(B) and its distance is 103 Kms.
After leaving out Churachandpur-Singhat sections (34.50 Kms), only the remaining section of 68.60 Kms would be constructed anew.
The road would connect Molnom with Mizoram via Singol and Tuivai.
There are innumerable potholes on Singhat-Molnom section of the highway and the highway surface would be made even by filling the potholes with sand gravels before going in for WBM, said the engineers.
This would be followed by another layer of WBM for the entire length of the highway.
Ultimately, the highway would be black-topped with two layers of bitumen.
The part of making the road surface even by filling up potholes has been completed by 80 per cent.
Road side drains and retaining walls are also being constructed along 5.30 Kms long section of the same highway.
Before the construction/repairing work started, it took around 6 hours to travel from Churachandpur to Molnom by a motor vehicle.
Now, it takes only three hours and even passengers have started plying on the highway.
The highway was under the care of State PWD before it was handed over to BRO in 2010 .
If there is no undue disturbances, the highway construction can be completed before the completion target and it would be a key highway which connects Manipur with other parts of the country, added the engineers.
