Arangpham shot dead

Imphal, January 12 2011: In continuing violence, unidentified armed persons shot dead a 57-year old elderly person engaged in the profession of Arangpham last night.

The incident came amid the public protest against the killing of Chairman of Board of Secondary Education, Manipur Dr Naorem Kunjabihari by unidentified armed persons inside his own office at the high security Babupara area earlier during the day yesterday.

On the other hand, unidentified armed persons who came to arrest a person reportedly assaulted not only the nephew of the person but also took away a mobile hand set and all the money in his possession apart from resorting to firing in populated area.

The elderly person identified as Chungkham Gambhir s/o late Chaoba of Kakyai Mayai Leikai was shot dead at his own locality at around 10.15 pm yesterday.

He was an Arangpham by profession and also dealt in fish trades.

According to family members, some unidentified armed persons came to their house asking for Gambhir at around 10 pm yesterday.

As none of the family members opened the door nor responded to their call, the unidentified armed persons started kicking the door and threatened to break in.

At last when the family members demanded to know who they were, the unidentified armed persons said that they are from Mayang Imphal and have come buy some fishes from Gambhir.

When the family members replied that Gambhir has not returned home yet, the armed persons went straight away towards the fishshed located just 30 metres to the north of the house.

From there, the armed persons dragged away Gambhir and shot him dead at a Loukon located 500 feet away.

In protest against the killing a public meeting was held at Kakyai Tona Kangjeibung today.

Along with formation of a Joint Action Committee, christened as Joint Action Committee against the brutal killing of Chungkham Gambhir, Kakyai, the meeting demanded befitting action against the killers.

Giving 2 days deadline to all concerned for coming out with a clarification on the killing, the meeting further resolved not to take back the body until a clarification.

Furthermore, the meeting resolved that the Government should pay compensation to the bereaved family and set up a security post in Kakyai area.

Highlighting these demands, the JAC has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister.

Decrying the killing, a protest demonstration was also staged at the community hall of Kakyai Mayai Leikai today.

Before the incident of killing Chungkham Gambhir, some unidentified armed persons also reportedly opened fire at the residence of one Lairenjam Jiten of Kakyai Makha Leikai and beat up one of the nephews of Jiten apart from snatching the mobile phone and whatever money he had.

In connection with the incident, family members of Jiten informed that three unidentified armed persons came to the house looking for Jiten at around 8.05 pm yesterday.

Jiten is an ex-member of Pukhrambam Gram Panchayat and is currently associated with an NGO connected with IWDP.

When wife of Jiten replied that her husband has not yet returned home, the armed persons who identified themselves as members of KCP Kesho Meitei barged into the house.

As Jiten was not in the house, they beat up 30year old Temba, one of the nephews of Jiten, who accidentally arrived in the house as the armed persons were leaving.

The armed persons also took away one mobile hand set and all the money in the possession of Temba.

They also resorted to firing at the gate of the house.
