Imphal, January 31 2025:
Tribal Youth Council Manipur, General Headquarters (TYCM-GHQ) submitted a representation to the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president urging the party to raise during the 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly the issue of non-conduct of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) election.
In a release, TYCM said the Governor on January 24 summoned the 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly from February 10, 2025 .
Taking this opportunity, TYCM-GHQ urged the MPCC leaders to ensure that the issue of the non conduct of ADC elections, due in 2020 but have not yet been conducted, is raised on the floor of the house.
Four years have now passed without any progress, it denounced, while adding that the non-existence of the ADCs for the past four years has led to a loss of development opportunities for the tribal population and the abandonment of numerous beneficial schemes.
These losses cannot be easily recovered/compensated for by future generations.
The government was able to successfully conduct the 18 th Lok Sabha elections during the on-going ethnic crisis in Manipur.
Therefore, there is no question of its inability to conduct the ADC elections at this time, it maintained, and continued that the prolonged delay in conducting the ADC elections is adversely impacting grass-roots government and development in hill tribal areas, depriving the tribal communities of their constitutional and fundamental rights to local self-government.
As an opposition political party in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, the release expressed hoped that Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) will take a proactive role in addressing this critical issue in the interest of justice and fairness for the tribal population and put pressure on the state government to conduct the ADC elections at the earliest.
