One shot dead in Thoubal district

Thoubal, May 19 2025:
An owner of a farm shot dead a man with his licensed gun at Heirok Khangarok yesterday night.
The deceased is reportedly the caretaker of the farm.
He has been identified as Laishram Tombi (45) of Heirok Part II Devi Mandap Leikai.
The owner of the farm has been identified as Ningthoujam Rajnikanta (44) of Heirok Part II Mayai Leikai.
Rajnikanta has been arrested, and he has confessed to shooting L Tombi dead, said the police.
The incident occurred at around 8.30 pm yesterday during a feast, organised in the evening, celebrating the inauguration of Rajnikanta's farm-house.
Rajnikanta, Tomba and some other people were present at the feast.
A heated argument ensued during the feast and Rajnikanta shot dead Tombi on his head using his licensed gun, said sources in the police.
Tombi was rushed to Thoubal district Hospital but he was declared dead by the doctors.
The mortal remains have been deposited at JNIMS, however, family members and a JAC, formed in connection with the case, have decided not to claim the body until their demands are met.
After the incident at around 11.30 pm yesterday, an angry mob stormed the house of Rajnikanta and caused some damages to it.
People who were present at the feast said Rajnikanta also fired shots in the air during the day which angered many who attended the inauguration of his farm.
L Tombi is survived by his wife, Laishram Padama and three children.
Meanwhile, the JAC has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and SP Thoubal district today.
The JAC has demanded the Government and authorities concerned to arrest and punish all the persons involved in the murder and compensate Rs 50 lakh to the family of the victim.
The family will not claim the body of the deceased until all demands are met.
The mortal remains will be buried in Rajnikanta's farm where he was murdered, said JAC members in a sit-in protest organised at Heirok Part II Devi Mandap today.
