Tamenglong, March 19 2025: District Health Society, Tamenglong held a meeting for District Level Coordination Committee on National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) at the Mini Secretariat DC's conference hall.

The meeting chaired by Committee chairman and Tamenglong DC Dr Angshhn L Dangshawa was also attended by members including SP, CMO, CEO/ADC, Zonal Education Officer, District Information Officer, Designated Officer, Food Safety Administration and Excise Officer.

Committee's member secretary and district nodal officer of NTCP Dr Namjubou Daimei also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Dr Namjubou said that the main aim of the NTCP is to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and to reduce the production and supply of tobacco products.

He also said that National Tobacco Control Programme aims for effective enforcement of the provisions under 'The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (COTPA)' .

If the programme is conducted effectively, it will help the people to quit tobacco use and facilitate implementation of strategies for prevention and control of tobacco advocated by WHO Framework Convention of Tobacco Control, he added.

It may be mentioned that the Government of India launched the NTCP in year 2007-08 during the 11th Five-Year-Plan, with an aim to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption.
