Imphal, May 14 2025:
Although there are many laws for protecting the farmlands in the state, they are not effective enough consequently putting the farmers under immense strain.
Additionally, the state is unable to meet the demands of the ever-increasing population, which could lead to a grim future, cautioned RK Fortune Developers Private Limited managing director RK Rameshwar.
He made the statement as the chief guest at the observance of World Farmers' Day organised by Loumi Yaipha Lup, Kangleipak (LOYALUP) at Manipur Press Club here on Wednesday.

The observance was also attended by LOYALUP president Yurembam Tiken Singh as president, while MOVCDNER project officer Kh Nimaichand Singh, ICAR Manipur Centre senior soil scientist Dr Th Basanta Singh and DM College of Arts associate professor Thongbam Ibotombi Singh were the guests of honour.
Rameshwar continued that the once green paddy fields of the state are slowly disappearing in the last 10-20years.The fields in Ahallup, Khurai, Patsoi, Langjing, Sangaiprou, Ghari, Mongsangei, Kyamgei, Canchipur and other areas are now replaced by rows of houses.
Despite the presence of farmland protection acts and rules, the laws have remained ineffective.
Thus, there is a need to protect the farmlands or else it would be detrimental to the farmers and the people of the state in the future, he maintained.
LOYALUP president Tiken, recounted how the organisation was established and highlighted the importance of the observance.
He further mentioned the works taken up by LOYALUP till date along with stressing the need to control the use of pesticides by the valley-based farmers.
Delivering the keynote speech, LOYALUP general secretary Nongthombam Irabot sought the blessings of the people in ensuring a good, quality yield.
He then observed that most farmers have a firm mindset not to have their children become farmers.
However, as long as this mind set continues, it would not help in the development of agriculture sector, he remarked.
