Traffic police collect over ₹9 lakh fines during Yaoshang

Imphal, March 19 2025:
During the recent Yaoshang Festival, two accident-related deaths were reported as Imphal West Traffic police collected cumulative amount of over Rs 9 lakh from numerous individuals on the charge of violation of traffic rules and regulations over the course of the 5-day festival.
According to police report, an accident involving two two-wheelers occurred on March 16 along the Indo-Burma Sugnu Road in Elangkhangpokpi area.
The accident involved a Bajaj Pulsar 180 (MN04B 3161) and a Yamaha R15 (MN01A Q5292) .
The Yamaha R15 rider identified as Naorem Tomthinganba (21) s/o Mohindro of Samurou Oinam succumbed to injuries.
The other driver, who was also injured in the accident, has been identified as Yendrembam Mohindro Singh (68) of Elangkhangpokpi Mayai Leikai.
The second incident took place on March 14, the first day of Yaoshang, around 9:45 pm, near Maibam Lokpa Ching.
Naorem Birjit Singh, 42, from Oinam Mayai Leikai, was involved in a self-accident while riding a Honda Activa (MN 01 A D/6430) .
In response to these incidents and to ensure public safety, Traffic SP Pramesh Arambam, deployed special traffic monitoring teams throughout Imphal West district from March 14 to 18 to curb traffic violations such as drunk driving, riding without helmets, triple-riding on two-wheelers, over speeding and underage driving.
During this period, the traffic police imposed fines on 522 individuals, totalling Rs 9,94,000 .
However, only 9 individuals paid their fines, while the remaining 513 did not comply with the payments.
