State farmers advised to adopt 'smart agriculture'

State farmers need to adopt smart agricultural methods to cope with challenges posed by the impact of climate change, said ICAR Manipur centre head Dr Ch Basudha, while pointing out that environmental degradation caused by global climate change has become huge challenges for agricultural activities, particularly in Manipur.
Dr Basudha gave the clarion call during the inaugural session of the three-day training-cum-awareness programme on 'Climate adoptive agricultural practice for rainfed eco-system' at ICAR Manipur Centre Complex, Lamphelpat on Tuesday.
The training is being organised by KVK, Ukhrul under the aegis of Technology Demonstration Component (TDC)-National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA).
Speaking at the event, Dr Basudha noted that climate change has given huge impact to fragile eco-system of the North Eastern states including Manipur, particularly hitting hard the agricultural sector.
Citing recent instances of widespread destruction of crops due to flash flood caused by excessive rainfall and hailstorm with strong winds in the state, the ICAR head informed that scientists have developed climate resilient crops and new technologies to cope with the challenges caused by climate change.
Stressing the need for introducing new crops and technologies to the farmers along with assuring that ICAR and KVKs across the state are ready to extend help to the food producers, she advised farmers to consult with experts regularly and acquire proper knowledge on the impact of climate change.
As part of the programme, a custom hiring centre for KVK, Ukhrul was opened and a Memorandum of Understanding for opening the centre signed with representatives of four villages from Ukhrul district.
The programme was also attended by Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Ukhrul district officer Kh Manorama, Ukhrul DAO Dr RK Umakanta, KVK, Ukhrul head Dr S Khogen, KVK, Tamenglong head cum senior scieptist Dr H Lembisana, KVK, Ukhrul SMS (plant protection) Dr N Ajitkumar and farmers from Ukhrul district.
