Imphal, January 31 2025:
Meira Paibi members of Haoreibi Awang Leikai staged a protest on Friday to condemn the killing of a student at Salungpham village in Thoubal district, and the arrest and detention of village volunteers last year, while also demanding repeal of the Armed Forces' Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state.
During the protest organised by Haoreibi Apunba Lup, local Meira Paibi leader Seram Debala told media persons that village volunteers came out to shield innocent people from the onslaught of Chin-Kuki narco-terrotists while pointing out that Manipur would be in a dire situation had the youngsters not volunteered to defend the land and its people.

She said that village volunteers protected lives and properties of the people from Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists when government forces could not and they continue to defend villages in fringe areas.
However, both the state and Central forces are hounding village volunteers by registering FIRs, she said and demanded immediate withdrawal of the FIRs.
According to Debala, all the arrested village volunteers must be released immediately without any condition and AFPSA must be repealed from the state.
During the protest, slogans like 'We condemn killing of village volunteer', 'Do not arrest village volunteers', 'Transfer SP Thoubal to either Kangpokpi or Churachandpur immediately', 'Suspend police commandos involved in killing village volunteer' and 'Repeal AFSPA from Manipur.' were shouted.
