Imphal, April 17 2024:
Asserting that the BJP is attempting to deceive and mislead the people through issuance of concocted statements, CLP leader and former chief minister O Ibobi Singh has stressed the need for the public to maintain high alert and emphasised the importance of public cooperation and support to Congress party in bringing change within the state by electing its candidates in the Lok Sabha election.
Speaking in a felicitation function organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee for Hiyanglam AC ex-MLA Elangbam Dwijamani, who re-joined the Congress party, at Congress Bhawan, here, on Wednesday, Ibobi accused BJP leaders of making baseless statements with the ulterior motive to sway manipulate public opinions.
Urging the public to extend cooperation and support to the Congress party in its efforts to bring about positive change in the state through election of its candidates in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, he also conceded that when the Congress party was in power and serving the people, there may have been instances of dissatisfaction from the public.
Regardless of the fact that it is impossible for any party to uphold every need and desire of the citizens, the Congress party has steely resolve to face the challenges as well as to plug the shortcomings, he maintained.
Ibobi further stated that the ongoing humanitarian crisis and resultant suffering of the people in the state is due to the BJP-led government, which the people of Manipur voted to power with the belief that the party, being in power at the centre, would usher in positive change and development.
Contending that the unrest situation in the state is fallout of attempt by certain elements harbouring sinister agenda, he, nevertheless, pointed out that there were various instances of communal conflicts in other parts of the country, but never of the intensity and protracted as being experienced in Manipur.
The Manipur conflict could have been resolved within a matter of days if the "double engine BJP government" had the desire to do so.
Instead, the crisis seems to have been intentionally prolonged, he added.
MPCC present K Meghachandra, who was also present at the function, said that though the BJP claims that the Free Movement Regime (FMR) has been removed, but no official statement in writing has been made public as of now.
This has been clearly highlighted by the government in the assembly session.
As such, the claim of BJP that FMR has been removed is cheating the public.
He further stated that the public need to understand that the present government cannot restore peace in the state.
The people need to elect the best candidate in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election or else we will repent in future.
It is also very unfortunate and astonishing that Union Home Minister Amit Shah who visited Manipur recently did not mention anything about resolving the present crisis but only blamed the Congress for whatever that has happened in the state.
The people are now very clear that Amit Shah is fully involved in the present crisis in the state.
It is time for the people to consider this fact and elect the Congress candidates in the 8th Lok Sabha elections, he added.
The function was also attended by CWC member Gaikhangam, MLA K Ranjit, Th Lokeshwar and other leaders of the party.
According to news agencies, the ruling BJP expelled party leader E Dwijamani Singh for six years, just two days ahead of the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls.
The agencies quoted a BJP functionaries as saying that Dwijamani, who belongs to the Hiyanglam Mandal of the party, was expelled for "violation of party's rules and regulations" .
A former Congress MLA, Dwijamani soon after his expulsion, returned to the party, which he quit in 2022 after being denied a ticket for the Assembly elections.
