Imphal, May 06 2025:
The Federation of All Tribal Youth Clubs' Manipur (FATCYM) and Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM) have expressed disappointment over the preparations for the upcoming Shirui Festival 2025, arguing that it prioritizes entertainment over its cultural significance.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club, FATCYM general secretary Hopeson Mingshinao stated that the Shirui Festival 2025 is scheduled to take place from May 20 to 24 across various venues in Ukhrul district.

The State has allocated Rs 6.30 crore for the festival, with Rs 2.83 crore reportedly spent on Shirock alone and Rs 20 lakh on the Miss Shirui Lily 2025 pageant, he said and added that other expenditure includes Rs 5.25 lakh on public transport, Rs 16.16 lakh on security and traffic management, Rs 25 lakh on media partnership, Rs 14 lakh on drone show on the opening day, Rs 20 lakh on fireworks and Rs 20 lakh on miscellaneous expense.
Saying that the festival preparations prioritize entertainment with significant investment and there is little focus on showcasing and promoting Ukhrul's flora and fauna, he added that the festival lacks space for cultural promotion, local entrepreneurship, and eco-tourism, which he believes should be key aspects of the event.
He then urged the authorities to revise the fund allocation for the festival.
TYCM president Robert Gonmei appealed to the authorities to prioritize infrastructure development, such as building staircases, railings, and resting sheds at Shirui hill range, over lavish spending on events like a rock show and a beauty pageant among others.
Saying that holding the festival solely for entertainment defeats its purpose, he urged the authorities to revise the fund allocation.
He said that TYCM has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Secretary outlining their demand and is awaiting a response.
