Teachers, students feted on Teachers' Day

Imphal, September 05 2012: Dedicated teachers and meritorious students along with educational institutions whose students performed excellently in the class X and XII examinations were honoured on the occasion of State Level Teachers' Day celebration organised today by Department of Education (Schools) at the Lamphelpat office of Directorate of Education (S) .

As chief guest of the celebration, Education minister M okendro presented shawls and citations to seven teachers who were conferred with the State Teachers' Award 2012 .

The awardees included headmaster in-charge of Chabung Company Chirai junior High School Naorem Debal Singh; Assistant headmistress in-charge of Rengkai Higher Secondary School Mrs Lalthiengzo, TG Hr Sec School Lecturer Nongthonbam Chandrajini Devi; Budhimanjuri Jr HS headmistress in-charge Kshetrimayum Promila Devi; Bishnupur Kha Jr HS headmistress in-charge Dr Soibam Shantibala Devi, Kasturba Girls Jr HS headmaster in-charge Sinam Nabakumar Singh; and Irilbung High School headmistress in-charge Thokchom Indubala Devi.

Schools awarded for producing toppers in the HSLC Examination 2012 included St Joseph's School, Sangaiprou; Don Bosco High School, Langjing; Little Flower School, Sangaiprou; Khundrakpam Public School; Bethel English School, Nambol; Antarctic English School, Yairipok; Victory High School, Kakching; Progressive English School, Wangjing; Little Master English School, Samurou; Keishamthong High School; and Children's Model Academy, Thanga.

schools honoured for producing top three position holders in arts stream of HSSLC Exam 2012 were Enlighten Knowledge Hr Sec School, Sangakpham; TG hr Sec School, Imphal; and Don Bosco Hr Sec School, churachandpur while representatives of Human Resource Development Academy, Ghari; Temple of Learning, Canchipur; Comet School, Changangei Uchekon; Fancier Abhiram Hr Sec School, Thoubal; and Herbert School, Changangei Airport Road were felicitated for producing toppers in science stream in the same examination.

Mt Everest College, Senapati; Rayburn College, Churachandpur; and Tg hr Sec School were also awarded for producing toppers in commerce stream.

Prior to the awards presentation ceremony, Minister Okendro led the dignitaries in offering floral tribute to independent India's first President Dr S Radhakrishan, whose birth anniversary is commemorated as the Teachers' Day.

Speaking on the occasion, Okendro opined that Manipuri society had been enduring chaos and uncertainty for the past many decades consequent to decline in the respect for one another.

Expressing hope that every section of the society would strive to promote sense of camaraderie, he also called upon the teachers to contribute their mite in the realisation of the Government's aim to make education a complementary sector for tourism industry in the State.

He also regretted that sanctity of the Teachers' Day has been undermined by some section of the teacher community, who conveyed resentment for non-clearance/payment of pending monthly salaries.

Reiterating his assertion that there would be positive changes in the State's education system, the Minister conceded that change is inevitable to mould the future generation.

While pledging to redress disparities in salary amount of teachers, Okendro also affirmed that as soon the financial constraints faced by the Government is over relevant process would be initiated to ensure that performance-based incentives are provided to the teachers.

Noting that Tamphasana Girls, Churachand and Johnstone higher secondary schools inspite of facing infrastructure problems in accommodating large number of admission seekers had ultimately succeeded in enrolling the students, the Education Minister conveyed that some specific schools in all the district headquarters would be adequately developed to ensure education for all.

Out of the Rs 300 crores allotted to the State to develop education sector under SSA and RMSA programmes efforts are on to construct five classrooms each for primary level schools while junior level institutions would have eight classrooms each, confided the Minister while adding that in addition to separate toilets for boys and girls and kitchens these schools would have a uniform outlook/colour.

He also claimed that against the previous trend of about 3600 students preferring to study in other States/cities every year, the figure has declined to only about 1700 .

Informing that a Manipuri Sankritan institution would be inaugurated soon at DM College campus, Okendro also announced that a teachers' guest house would be constructed at a suitable site inside Bengali High School in order to facilitate retired teachers from distant places stay at the proposed facility at the time pension file processing.

maintaining that the guest house would have 60 rooms, he also exuded confidence that all the 60 legislators would contribute their mite in construction of the facility.

Conveying people's representatives from all the nine districts would be consulted and assigned specific tasks in the appointment of teachers, the Minister also assured that all possible welfare measures for the teachers would be taken up.

MLAs RK Anand, MK Preshow Shimray, M Prithviraj and Meghachandra along with Director (Education-S) H Deleep Singh and former Manipur University Vice chancellor Prof C Amuba also attended the event.
