Imphal, October 03 2011:
Questioning the utility of having Governor Gurbachan Jagat when he has not been able to do anything to end the over two months long economic blockade along the National Highways which has cut off the supply lines of the people, MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang has demanded that the Governor go back.
Participating in a day-long hunger strike organised jointly by MPP Youth Front and Chanura Marup in front of the party office today, Dr Nimaichand pointed out that the economic blockade imposed by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee along the National Highways has completed two months and three days today and the suffering of the people has peaked.
Dr Nimaichand noted that one litre of petrol now costs Rs 130, one litre of diesel costs around Rs 60 and price of one filled LPG gas cylinder for domestic cooking has reached Rs 1500 .
On the other hand, taking advantage of the economic blockade, the shopkeepers have hiked the price of every commodities beyond the reach of common people.
In spite of all these, Governor Gurbachan Jagat has not been able to prevail upon the Central Government to intervene and take up necessary measures to ameliorate the suffering of the people, Dr Nimaichand lamented.
In such a situation, what is the point of having a Governor as the head of the State administrative ?, he questioned, and added its better that he (Governor) be recalled immediately.
MPP had already submitted memorandum to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister and meeting had been held with the Governor over the issues setting Manipur today.
But the Central Government has not given any attention and continue to give free hands to the blockade supporters, Dr Nimaichand alleged, adding that this is nothing but allowing the suffering people of Manipur to their own fate.
The State Government has also not taken up any steps towards resolving the present issue and end the suffering of the people, Dr Nimaichand further alleged.
MPP Youth Front president M Maniton Mangang demanded the Government of India and Government of Manipur to take up immediate necessary measures for lifting the economic blockade.
He alleged that the present SPF Government has been paying more attention to election campaign instead of lifting the economic blockade.
The SPF Government has been keeping its eyes shut to the hardships being faced by the drivers along the National Highways, Maniton further alleged, while demanding to know why the Central forces are being deployed in Manipur if they could not be utilised for ensuring security along the National Highways at such critical moments.
