Police officer's house attacked

Imphal, February 27 2024:
Unidentified armed persons attacked the private resid ence of Imphal East additional SP (Ops) M Amit at Wanjgkhei Tokpam Leikai on Tuesday evening leaving some police commandos injured while police rescued Amit after he was briefly taken captive by the armed persons.
According to a police source, three commando teams led by Imphal West commando OC rushed to Amit's residence based on report about large numbers of armed persons gathered at his house.
On duty, Amit too rushed to his house after getting the news.
The armed persons stopped the police teams at Wangkhei Laishram Leikai junction.
While Amit himself and other police officers were holding talk at the spot, firing started all of sudden and the armed persons abducted Amit and snatched some weapons too.
Some police personnel escorting Imphal West police commando OC and other personnel suffered injuries in the scuffle while some police vehicles were damaged.
At the same time, the armed persons attacked the residence of Amit and caused partial damage to four cars parked inside the residential complex and the clinic run by Amit's father Dr Kulachandra.
After the firing incident, large numbers of state and central forces led by DIG (Range-I) and SPs of Imphal East and Imphal West rushed to the area and fired several blank rounds to control the situation.
Upon seeing arrival of additional forces in the area, the armed persons fled along with Amit.
Later, the police team led by IGP (Zone I) inspected assessed the situation besides picking up eight persons from the area.
Meanwhile, Porompat police station has registered a case and recovered some cartridges suspected to be of 9mm calibre.
According to Dr Kullachandra, they heard some men banging their gate around 7 pm.
Upon checking the CCTV footage, they saw several well-armed men barging through the gate.
As he enquired reason for their visit from inside the gate, some of them started indiscriminate firing, to which they hid inside a room, which they thought would be safer.
The armed miscreants vandalised and fired several rounds at cars parked in the courtyard as well as other items, at which point, he called and informed Amit over the phone about the situation.
He further said that most of the family members are doctors, who have been providing healthcare service to the public.
There was neither any monetary demand from any organisation nor they have any enmity with any group.
They are clueless about the reason for Tuesday's act, he said while decrying the act of the miscreants.
Consequent to the incident, state police and central paramilitary forces carried out a massive search operation in the area.
At around 7.30 pm, Amit was rescued by a team of Imphal West district police from Kwakeithel area and brought to Raj Medicity.
Three commando personnel, namely, Meitram Prashanta (31), Khullembam Bikram (40) and Yengkhom Arnold (30) were also injured in the incident and underwent treatment at Raj Medicity.
Moreover, three civilians, namely S Kabita (62), (gunshot injury by stray bullet in her home), Rebinash Moirangthem (24) son of Ranjan of Kwakeithel Akham Leikai (right leg), and Kangjam Bhimsen (20) son of Abosana of Basikhong (self-made accident in the melee) were rushed to JNIMS hospital.
