Livelihood training camp conducted

A livelihood training camp for capacity building of local communities for the conservation of Sangai was conducted at Kumbi from October 31 to November 1 .
According to a press release from Wildlife Institute of India, the camp was organised with an aim to build the capacity of the local communities particularly women to enhance their income through promotion of alternative livelihoods.
As part of the, production of the products by the trainees was started at the Forest Range Office, Keibul.
The products will be showcased during the upcoming Sangai Festival under the theme "Sangai Conservation Foundation: A Women Initiative for Sangai Conservation" .
This is an effort by the women group to enhance their livelihood through alternative means to reduce their dependence on the resources of Keibul Lamjao National Park, it said.
Raw materials that are locally and easily available are being utilised to produce fruit processing and bakery products.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), DJN Anand; Bubeshore of Manipur Biodiversity Board; U Himatkumar and U Rinita, CEOs of Green Foundation visited the women group to show their group and encourage them in their endeavour.
The importance of active involvement of local stakeholders in addressing the issues facing Sangai conservation will be stressed through the women group.
This is a step towards framing a holistic approach involving participation from the local people in conservation especially those who are directly dependent on the natural resources of Loktak Lake and Pumlen Pat, the release added.
