Thoubal, May 16 2024:
Under the aegis of All Yairipok Dukandar Association, shop owners staged sit-in protest at Yairipok Keithel traffic island on Thursday denouncing unaffordable monetary demand served to shops in the market by different organisations.
All shops at Yairipok New Market and Tampha Keithel including pharmacy outlets and women vendors ceased business for the day and joined the protest with bank branches in the market area also downing shutters and passenger services halting service.
Interacting with the media, All Yairipok Dukandar Association president Lairikyengbam Shyamcharan said that the shop owners and women vendors at Yairipok Keithel have been regularly contributing to donation drive and extending assistance ever since the ethnic conflict broke out on May 3 last year.
Out of several organisations serving monetary demand to the shop owners around 10 have accepted the amount offered.
However, four organisations are insisting on coughing up the exact amount they are demanding even as some organisations are resorting to daily collection thereby forcing shop owners to contribute daily to two to three organisations.
In such a situation, they could no longer run their small businesses, he said and appealed to the organisations concerned to reconsider their demands and refrain from making unreasonable and unaffordable monetary demands.
The shop owners and vendors would like to have a joint meeting with the different organisations and bring an amicable solutions to the issue, he added.
