Imphal, July 18 2019:
Leprosy patient staying at Lei Ingkhol staged a sit in protest at the site today demanding the State Government to make necessary arrangements to conserve the area.
Lei Ingkhol, Chingmeirong, was designated by Maharaja Bodhachandra in 1946, as a place for people with leprosy to stay and now the place is populated with 160 households with 1300 people.
Speaking to media persons, one Y Giridhon said that during 2003-2004, in the times of the Congress Government, many houses were destroyed as the area supposedly hampered the construction of the Capital Project.
He then appealed to the present State Government to protect the area in the interest of the people who have lived in the area from the past.
On the other hand, Lei Ingkhol Yum Development Organisation secretary Sarajan alleged that during the time of the Congress, supposed combing operations were conducted in the area but in reality the signatures of the people were forcefully taken and the people were evicted.
He then appealed to the Government to ensure the people with leprosy have a place to stay at Lei Ingkhol and to ensure the conservation of the area in the interest of the people.
