A meeting of Kuki chiefs of Manipur to discuss issues of paramount importance relating to the prevailing social and political conditions faced by the Kuki people was held under the aegis of the Kuki Inpi Manipur at TRI Auditorium.
According to a statement issued by Khaimang Chongloi, General Secretary of KIM, the state government's authoritarian policies vis a vis the Kuki people has prompted the Kuki Inpi to call the meeting.
'The state government's constant plan to impose the Village Authority Act or its amendments has led the Kuki chiefs to harbor the feeling of distrust on the government, said the statement, while adding that the Village Authority Act in all its forms is in total contrast to the traditional Kuki chieftainship form of village administration.
The Village Authority Act in the first place was passed by the state government without the approval and consent of the Kuki people, it alleged.
The meeting discussed the government's recent plan to amend the Village Authority Act and adopted a resolution to oppose the Village Authority Act Amendment Bill.
The Kuki chiefs and the Kuki Inpi regarded this bill as unacceptable, said the statement.
The Kuki Inpi is peeved that the government in total contravention of the Kuki people's tradition and custom has many a time tried to impose laws and rules against the will of the Kuki people, it charged.
The meeting also resolved to hold another meeting of Kuki chiefs to improvise or reform the village administration of the Kukis for which the Kuki Inpi Manipur has been entrusted the responsibility of organizing it.
