Imphal, September 14 2018:
The All Clubs Organisation Association Meira Paibi-Lup (ACOAM-Lup) Kangleipak has urged the State Government to take up necessary steps to ensure Geographical Indication (GI) registration of Chak-hao (black rice) .
Speaking to media persons at the Lup office at Lamphelpat today, its president in-charge Sanjit Soraisam said that it is rather unfortunate that the absence of GI registration of black rice has resulted in people lacking any awareness about the true producer as well as the place which produces black-rice.
He also asked why the State Government has failed to implement GI registration for such a highly nutritional indigenous rice variety produced in the State.
It is also unfortunate that many States are trying to bank on the black rice while the facility of GI tagging is not even present in Manipur, Sanjit added.
He also appealed to the farmers not to export chak-hao Poireiton and chak-hao Amubi and to sell them in the State instead.
It may be mentioned that the authorities are taking up steps to export various rice varieties found in the valley districts of the State under the Mission Organic for Value Chain Development of North Eastern Region.
