Imphal, December 11 2023:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba to bring up the current crisis in the state for discussion in the on-going Parliament session and help in restoring peace and tranquillity in the state at the earliest.
A team of MPCC led by vice president Hareshwar Goshwami under the guidance of MPCC president Keisham Meghachandra is presently in Delhi.
On December 8, the team submitted a memorandum to MP Sanajaoba urging him to bring up and discuss the unrest situation gripping Manipur in the Parliament.
Since the team could not meet him on that day, they called on the Rajya Sabha MP on Monday evening.
During the meeting which lasted for about one and half hours with Delhi University associate professor M Ramananda Singh also in attendance, among others, MP Sanajaoba told the MPCC team that the points mentioned in the memorandum are also his wish.
Stating that he had already tabled issues of Manipur in the parliament in the past but was not granted the permission to discuss, Sanajaoba affirmed to bring up the issue again for discussion to expedite solution to the crisis.
The MPCC team reiterated its demands mentioned in the memorandum and urged the MP to try his best and bring peace in the state thereby enabling the displaced people to return to their respective homes.
The memorandum, submitted by MPCC, seeks the attention of the Parliament to address the critical situation in Manipur.
It highlights outbreak of violence on May 3, the aftermath of which resulted in continuous turmoil, forcing over 60,000 people to live in relief camps, with more than 200 casualties or missing people, and the looting of approximately 6,000 weapons from police posts and battalions.
It further stressed the urgent need for immediate rehabilitation and restoration of all displaced people with adequate security and prompt compensation, and immediate measures for the restoration of peace and normalcy in Manipur.
