Ukhrul, May 19 2025:
Ukhrul deputy commissioner Ashish Das on Monday unveiled the statues of Shimreishang and Maitonphi at the Mini-Secretariat campus, in the presence of DLOs, departmental staff, and representatives from civil society organisations.
This artwork recaptures the immortal love story of Shimreishang Zimikwo and Maitonphi Lungleng from Phungcham (Yangreiram) village.
Forbidden to marry due to their differing social classes and the stringent social norms of the time, Shimreishang tragically died of a broken heart.

Meanwhile, Maitonphi was secretly married off to Pansa Vasah of Halang village, with the couple destined to reunite only in the afterlife.
Their moving tale has been passed down through seven generations.
The sculpture was commissioned by former Ukhrul DC Zuringla Kengoo and donated in collaboration with like-minded friends dedicated to preserving Tangkhul Naga culture and history.
The artistic execution was the work of Zeno Chiphang, Phanitphang Saree, RS Mayonmi, and Yungrei Kashung, who collectively brought this significant cultural tribute to life.
