Tissue cultured Shirui lily planted

Imphal, April 13 2015 :
An awareness campaign-cum-plantation programme of Shirui Lily�an endangered heritage flower of Manipur� was organized by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre under DST WOS-B programme in collaboration with KVK, Ukhrul and the Shirui Village Authority at Shirui, Ukhrul on April 10 .
Awareness was given to the local people to encourage conservation of the rare endangered Asiatic lily species through exhibition, signature campaign and plantation programme of Shirui lily plantlets raised through tissue culture.
The programme was conducted by ICAR scientist Dr M R Sahoo and DST scientist M Premi .
M Soren, General Manager NABARD, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, inaugurated the exhibition, signature campaign and also flagged off the plantation programme.
About 100 farmers, including farm women and youth led by the village headman L Willington participated in the programme along with the invitees from KVK, NABARD, farmers club, youth club and other social organizations.
The photo exhibition-cum-live exhibits of 'in vitro' regenerated plantlets, bulbs and bulblets, seeds, growing media, acclimatization and hardening medium of Shirui lily were displayed in the day long programme.
All the dignitaries and participants took part in the signature campaign on "Conservation of Rare Endangered Shirui Lily" .
About 100 plantlets of Shirui lily out of the 500 plantlets raised through tissue culture techniques at ICAR were planted in the Siroi hill peak which is located about 2,750 meters above the sea level.
