Veterinary Dept rolls up sleeves to fight rabies; tells officials to take action

In the wake of various dog bite-related fatalities coming in from different parts of the State, State Veterinary Department has directed its officials posted in all districts to take up necessary measures for administering anti-rabies vaccine to dogs on a wide scale.
The department has also sent brain samples of dogs that had bitten people to the laboratory of Veterinary College at Hebbal, Bangalore in Karnataka for necessary test.
According to officials of Veterinary Department, certain necessary measures have been taken up by the department following death of people from dog-bite in Churachandpur district and Andro in Imphal East.
Veterinary teams of the department have already conducted inspection visits in Churachandpur and Andro where cases of dog-bite fatalities have been reported.

Works of administering anti-rabies vaccine in the areas are going on and Veterinary Hospital in all districts directed to administer anti-rabies vaccine to dogs free of cost.
Works of administering anti-rabies vaccine at Sanjenthong Veterinary Hospital are also going on, the officials said.
Informing that Rapid Action Team which will be working 24-hour has been formed; the officials explained that the team will rush to area where cases of mad dogs are reported immediately.
To do the needful, vehicles for timely transportation of the team have been arranged as well, they added.
The officials further disclosed that the government has given approval for releasing fund for prevention of dog-bite cases which has created a fear psychosis amongst the people.
Brain samples of the dogs that had bitten people at Saikot, Churachandpur and Andro have been sent to the laboratory of Veterinary College, Hebbal for testing on Monday.
Results of the test will be reaching here within two-three days, the officials maintained.
To ensure wide anti-rabies vaccination drive in the State, an order for procurement of large quantity of the drug from Gujarat has been made.
The drugs will be reaching on January 20.At present, there are 5500 dosages of anti-rabies vaccine in the stock, they further informed.
Up to January 17, a total of 6665 dogs have been administered anti-rabies vaccine in Imphal East, 4470 in Imphal West, 1960 in Bishnupur, 3290 in Thoubal, 500 in Ukhrul, 1000 in Tamenglong, 4900 in Churachandpur, 2700 in Senapati and 2490 in Chandel, the officials said.
