In compliance with the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has urged the general public, representatives of festival committees, police, NGOs, local authorities etc to take suitable steps to control pollution while performing idol immersion ceremonies of Durga and Panthoibi Eratpa celebrations.
MPCB has directed creation of temporary ponds having earthern banks along river banks/designated immersion spots and apply synthetic liners under the water before immersion ceremonies are performed.
Bio-degradable materials must be collected separately for recycling/compositing whereas bio-degradable materials must be collected for disposal in sanitary landfills, said a press release.
It added that burning of solid wastes like used flowers, clothes, decoration items must be avoided at the immersion site.
Urging all to comply with the guidelines, MPCB said that water bodies and rivers must not polluted with toxic/non-biodegradable chemicals dyes/paints at the time of idol immersion.
