Fuel stock hits rock bottom

With the deteriorating state of Silchar bridge stalling the movement of good strucks, including oil tankers, the fuel stock in the State has hit rock bottom with only 214 kilitres of petrol.
Out of this, 170 Kl has to be kept aside for security related emergency services and with the daily requirements of the State put at 70 Kl, sale of fuel to the public is uncertain.
Briefing newsmen after a Cabinet meeting this evening, SPF spokesperson, N Biren said that this came up for discussion during the
meeting today.
The matter was highlighted to the Union Home Minister during his recent visit to the State, said Biren and he in turn got in touch with the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and instructed him to repair the bridge on a priority basis.
With the repairing of the bridge still to be completed, the transporters have been asked to either take the Sonai bridge or Dholu, said Biren and added that the Director of CAF and PD, Yaiskul who is presently at Silchar has conveyed the transporters' desire to take the Dholu route.
This has also been conveyed to the Assam Chief Minister.
At the moment, there are 22 tankers carrying petrol and diesel at Jiribam, six at Pailapool, 12 at Silchar and 87 on the Jowai-Silchar road.
To help the State in the transportation of fuel, the Railways has agreed to transport diesel and K-oil on broad gauge upto Jiribam from Assam, said Biren and added that petrol will be taken from Ramnagar.
The remaining stock of diesel is 583 Kl (daily need is 210 Kl) and SK oil 1128 Kl.
The Cabinet has also agreed to give grant-in aid to five colleges, said Biren and named them as SK Women College (Nambol), W Mani Girls' College (Thoubal), South East Manipur College (Komlathabi), Moreh college and Don Bosco College.
The total amount to be sanctioned for this is Rs 2.7 crores annually.
One Principal, nine lecturers, one office assistant and one chowkidar will be appointed towards this end, he added.
