Fake encounter case: Slain trio turn out to be surrenderees

Imphal, May 10 2012: The three alleged UG suspects who were claimed to have been killed by security forces during an encounter near Chadong Tangkhul village under Litan Police Station of Ukhrul district yesterday afternoon turned out to be the ones who have been handed over to one Major Hanuman of 23 Assam Rifles for surrendering with arms.

The three victims who lost their lives in the fake encounter were identified as Laishram Nobin (40) s/o Shyam of Tumukhong Awang Leikai, Ningthoujam Ingocha (42) s/o late Pasot of the same locality and Irengbam Roshan (27) s/o Ibomcha of Khagempalli Pankha.

All the three victims were family men.

Laishram Nobin left behind eight children, five sons and three daughters.

Ningthoujam Ingocha left behind two sons and one daughter while Irengbam Roshan left behind one daughter.

It is said that Laishram Nobin was a member of KYKL around 17 years back but later became the chief of Manipur National Liberation Front (MNLF), a newly established armed outfit.

Talking to mediapersons, Laishram Shyam, father of late Nobin, asserted that the three victims including his son, were not killed in any real encounter.

Shyam, who is over 70 years old, informed that at the request of his son for surrendering to the government, he met Major Hanuman of 23 Assam Rifles for facilitating the surrender of his son along with some other people.

While accepting the request, Major Hanuman asked him where his son and other cadres who wanted to surrender are staying and said they (security personnel) would go and pick them up.

But later on, Major Hanuman asked him to bring his son and other cadres.

Accordingly, he took his son and the other two victims yesterday morning and handed them over to Major Hanuman.

At the time of handing them over, he also gave one M-16 Rifles, one Lethod Gun, 50 live rounds of ammunition and three other Lethod bombs, which his son and other two victims brought, to Major Hanuman.

Shyam further informed that Major Hanuman expressed happiness over handing over his son and the other two victims for surrendering and asked him to return home without any worry.

So, he returned home in the morning itself.

However, in the afternoon, the report of three UG suspects shot dead in an encounter with Assam Rifles personnel which took place at a spot in between Langkhong and Chadong under Litan police station was heard.

Getting suspicious, he went to the morgue today morning and found out that the alleged slain UG suspects were none other than his own son and the other two victims he had handed over to Major Hanuman in the morning of previous day, Shyam said.

Decrying the conduct of the Assam Rifles who falsely claimed to have killed the three surrenderees in an encounter, the aged father said that he handed over his son and the two others for surrendering to the Government so that they could return to mainstream and led normal life, and not for sending them to the jaws of death.

The State Government should take up necessary legal action against Major Hanuman and other involved Assam Rifles personnel so as to avoid such unfortunate incidents in future, the father pleaded.
